A Shrinking House Majority and Speaker Mike Johnson’s Growing Anxiety

WASHINGTON — The sudden death of Republican Representative Doug LaMalfa, who represented Northern California, has made the Republican Party’s already fragile majority in the U.S. House of Representatives even more precarious. LaMalfa, who died at the age of 65, chaired the Western Caucus and was a reliable conservative vote. His passing leaves the House divided at 218 Republicans to 213 Democrats, giving Speaker Mike Johnson one of the narrowest governing margins in modern congressional history.

According to reporting and analysis from Axios and Politico, the reality is even more dire than the raw numbers suggest. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, a libertarian-leaning Republican who frequently votes against his party’s leadership, effectively reduces Johnson’s functional majority to a single vote in many cases.

A Brutal Math Problem for House Leadership

In March, if the seat vacated by Marjorie Taylor Greene is filled, Johnson could briefly regain a two-vote margin. But by April, when Democrats are expected to fill the seat previously held by Mikie Sherrill, the margin would again shrink to one.

Compounding the problem, another Republican lawmaker is currently hospitalized with injuries, further complicating attendance and vote counting on critical legislation.

Political analysts at CNN describe Johnson’s position as “nearly unworkable,” requiring him to satisfy hardline MAGA members, appease moderates, and still keep the House functioning — all at the same time.

As congressional instability grows, President Donald Trump appeared at the Kennedy Center to deliver remarks that quickly went viral. “This is a government being run like a mob operation,” Conway said. “Everything is about Trump — his name, his ego, and his personal benefit.”

Conway argued that Americans are increasingly connecting Trump’s alleged constitutional violations with everyday hardships: rising prices, cuts to health care subsidies, and the erosion of democratic norms.

Impeachment as a Constitutional Duty

Unlike many Democrats who remain cautious about impeachment strategy, Conway has been unequivocal. If elected, he says, impeachment would not be optional.

“Impeachment is not a political tactic,” Conway said. “It is a constitutional, legal, and moral obligation.”

In his view, meaningful progress on economic, foreign policy, or social issues is impossible so long as the executive branch is led by a president he describes as contemptuous of the rule of law and constitutional constraints.
